Stay Still

this was one of my training essays but i really liked it;
share your thoughts as well 🖤

“The curtain falls, it is the end of the show. I hope I left something for the audience to remember and live with.”

It has been three decades and two years since the democracy of Philippines escaped its darkest hour. Many still remember but the new ones today are slowly forgetting. There might even come in time, five or more years from now, Filipino youth will never have a direct memory of EDSA Revolution.Before the curtain falls, it is the last chance for us to leave a mark for the youth. A marl for them to remember those who stood at Edsa to influence its future meaning. Yet one question rings in my mind, “What has become of us today?”
        1986 is way too far from the present. Generations have passed and we are now in a new one. EDSA Revolution is a sensitive topic but a must-to-know. Then there’s the Filipino youth. The ones to keep the fire burning in the hearts of every countrymen. True enough that they never really saw the revolution. There is no denial as well that they were not even born in that year. Unfortunately, it leads us to an assumption that they will never know the sacrifices and will never share the pain in the past.
        With that kind of judgement we have in our society, we overlooked on great things. Mostly on the potential of our youth as the worthy inheritors of EDSA’s great legacy. With all the issues and influences given by our youth, it has really been harder to believe that they can live the legacy left in the hands. These are the challenges for both generations but still leads to one main goal—achieving absolute democracy freedom.
        Right from the start we, Filipinos are hungry in striving for our freedom. Centuries ago, our fellow countrymen fought against the colonialists. They got away from their iron fists which made bloodshed. Years passed by, Filipinos were caught in the same situation again. They were now fighting for democracy. “Never again,” they say. A revolution was born but not a single drop of blood fell. We got our democracy but the battle is not yet over. We continue to maintain democracy living in the Philippines and in every Filipino.
      No matter how democracy freedom lives within us. The reason how we achieved it is being neglected. The EDSA Revolution has not seeped into society’s consciousness. Yes, we continue to defend our rights. Yes, we continue to strive for justice. Yes, there has been many changes happened after the revolution. However, we haven’t truly embraced the essence of the revolution.Even the youth noticed it. Most of the Filipino youth see EDSA as it is but it is like a one episode in an unchanging style.

Comparing what our countrymen been through back then is so different from today. We are now more expressive, free and changed.Nonetheless, the society itself has not really changed, particularly the government. The Filipino youth might have caused headaches to the society but deep inside they care and ask. They see the evident failures happening in the government. This caused a domino effect. Our youth can see this but sad truth is, they never did anything.

Before the curtain falls for our golden generation, they have surely left a message for the audience, the Filipino youth. As they clap even more, there is still no assurance that they have received that message.

EDSA Revolution is living and breathing through the people.However, it is the time for them to let go of it. On the other hand, there is hesitation for the youth in accepting the challenge. This revolution is not a relic of our society. It is the main reason why we need to continue what it left for us, to make a change for the better.
      All of these answers to the question in my mind. This is what we have become. There are changes but not the real ones. Now, one can only hope that the golden generation will trust the youth. Also, one can only hope that the youth will continue the legacy of EDSA Revolution. The real question now for all of us is, “What can we do to make our legacy stay still?”

The mark left by the Revolution of 1986 will never be realized and seen if we, Filipino youth will just stay still.
